Duane was the son of Neal and Alta Zentner Davis. His family moved to Oregon in 1939, where he attended school in Dayton, Oregon; afterward serving in the Army and Oregon National Guard. Duane later worked for Alderman Farms, Fry Roofing, and the telephone company, from which he retired. Duane served in the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department for many years, eventually becoming fire chief.

He married Joeyn May Delaney on August 9, 1958. They lived in Dayton for many years before moving to McMinnville in 1980. Joeyn preceded Duane in death in 1988. He was also preceded in death by his only sibling, Betty Davis Launer, in 2011.

Duane enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing. Later in life, he enjoyed researching his family history, studying the Bible and even canning food. But most of all, Duane enjoyed people. He loved his family and his family loved him. He had many friends and Duane was liked by everyone he met.
