Lieutenant Charles Ray Hill,
*Young St. Augustine Pilot, Is Killed In Airplane Accident
Second Lieutenant Charles Ray Hill, 22, U. S. Army Flying Forces, died Wednesday, November 18th in an airplane accident in Panama Canal Zone, according to a telegram received last night by Mrs. C. C. Hill, mother of the young flier. The telegram said: "The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Second Lieutenant Charles R. Hill, died November 18th in Panama Canal Zone in airplane accident. Letter follows." The young man entered service November 10, 1941, not much over a year ago, and received his commission as a flier July 3, 1942, at Foster Field, Tex., when he had completed a 32-week course. He had spent 200 hours aloft, and 400 hours in ground school. He had the reputation of being a fine flier, courageous and resourceful. He left in August for duty outside of mainland United States. The young man was the son of Mrs. Minnie R. Hill of this city, and the late C. C. Hill, who was chairman of board of county commissioner for several years; also three brothers, Raymond D. Hill of this city; A. L Hill of Joliet, Ill., and C. C. Hill; also his grandmother, Mrs. A.R. DeVane of this city; and several young nieces and nephews, who were more like his brothers and sisters. as they were reared together. They are Misses Winifred, Sally Ann and Jean Hill, Second Lieutenant R. D. Hill, Jr. at Walterboro, SC; Carlton and Clifford Hill. Lieutenant Hill attended University of Florida. He, his nephew, Lt. Raymond DeWitt Hill Jr., Lt. R. J. Langston, all entered the flying forces of the Army within a few months of each other. They grew up together, and called themselves "The Three Musketeers," their friends here recall. News of the death of the young flier has been received here with a great sense of shock, and the sympathy of the community is being extended the bereaved mother, and other relatives. Just last Sunday a blue star in the Service Flag of Memorial Presbyterian Church was dedicated to Charles Ray Hill. Now the blue star will be changed to gold. and will be placed by that of Marc L. Corley, Jr., who died in an airplane . accident in Africa.
