Retired Librarian, Widow of the Honorable and Distinguished Jurist Wade Hampton McCree Jr., Mother and Grandmother. The second of six children of Magellan and Hattie McCrary, she died at her home in Ann Arbor after a brief illness. Mrs. McCree came with her parents, two sisters and a brother to Michigan at the age of three. Two more sisters were born in Detroit and, in 1929, the McCrary's moved to Ecorse, Michigan. After graduating from Ecorse High School in 1938, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from what was then known as Wayne University in 1942. While at Wayne, Dores pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Following graduation she moved to Boston, MA to attend graduate school at Simmons College, where she obtained a Master's degree in Library Science. In Boston she met her future husband, an aspiring young lawyer named Wade Hampton McCree, Jr., who was studying at Harvard Law School. After World War II, the young students travelled to Detroit and were married at the then 1st Unitarian Church of Detroit following her husband's service to his country as a Captain of the Infantry in the 92nd Division in Italy. They returned to Massachusetts where Wade completed his law degree. While in Boston, Mrs. McCree worked as a research assistant at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital. Their first child, the late Kathleen McCree Lewis, a prominent Detroit attorney, was born in Boston in 1947. Upon their return back to Detroit, Mrs. McCree became the library director at Wayne County General Hospital and in 1956 two more children were born, twins Wade Harper McCree, currently a Wayne County Circuit Judge, and Karen McCree Harvey, a librarian and researcher of New York City. Soon, Mrs. McCree retired from the County Library System to take care of her three children. Her husband's career flourished as he became a Wayne County Circuit Judge, a Federal Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan and the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, Solicitor General of the United States and a professor at the University of Michigan Law School. After her husband's death in 1987, Mrs. McCree remained active counseling law students at U of M, and serving as the founding president of the Historical Society of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and continuing as a staunch supporter of the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Friends School in Detroit and membership in Jack and Jill of America. Mrs. McCree was also devoted to the Unitarian-Universalist Church, which she joined while a student at Wayne. A dining room in the Unitarian-Universalist headquarters in Boston is named in her and her husband's honor. Mrs. McCree is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, a brother and two sisters.
