Benjamin Hambright was the son of Captain John Hardin Hambright and Nancy Black. His family played a significant role in American history: his father and grandfather, Lt Col Frederick Hambright, both fought in the Battle of King's Mountain, long recognized as the turning point of the American Revolution. Colonel Hambright was severely wounded in the battle. (Reference Find A Grave Memorial# 11149847.)
Their participation in the Battle of Kings Mountain was documented in the "The Patriots at Kings Mountain" by Bobby Gilmer Moss which, along with "King's Mountain And Its Heroes: History Of The Battle Of King's Mountain, October 7th, 1780, And The Events Which Led To It" by Lyman Copeland Draper, Anthony Allaire, and Isaac Shelby, has long been recognized as the definitive listing of the participants.
The Daughters of the American Revolution also documented their participation in the American Revolution. That organization has designated Captain Hardin "DAR Ancestor Number A204524" and Lt Colonel Hambright, "DAR Ancestor Number A049995".
John Hardin Hambright was the son of Frederick Hambright 1727 – 1817 and first wife, Sarah Hardin 1733 – 1780.
Frederick Hambright had immigrated from Germany and had settled in the area of Tryon County, North Carolina, where he became active in local affairs. He signed the Tryon Resolves in 1775 protesting the unfair practices of the British: this predated the Declaration of Independence by a year.
On Ocotober 28, 1784, John Hardin Hambright married Nancy Black in York District, SC. She was born August 13, 1763 in North Carolina and died March 1, 1845 in McMinn County, Tennessee. They raised a large family and their children were named in her application for a widow's pension, W932.(Reference Find A Grave Memorial# 135602457.)
Benjamin Hambright fought in the War of 1812. He married twice: first, to Thirza Howe and second, to Eliza Jane Mitchell. He had seven children by each wife.
