Wm Bailey Last Will and Testament

The last will and testament of me, William Bailey of the County of Tyler and State of Virginia which I publish and declare as Followeth. First I direct that my funeral expenses, just debts to be discharged out of my real estate if my personal property be not sufficient.

Item I give and bequeath to my son Daniel Bailey all that tract or parcel of land situate on McKimm's fork of Middle Island Creek in said County containing Eighty four acres purchased of James M. Stephenson Esq. Now in the posses sion of my said son. For and during his lifetime and afterwards to descend equally to the heirs of his body by his first wife Phebe their heirs and assigns forever, it being in lieu of Lot No 1 a parcel of land once intended

The William Bailey Family Cemetery was situated on the 71 acre plot, Item 3, above. Per grave markers found in the survey performed by historians in the mid 20th century, this was used as William Bailey's family burial plot as early as the 1840s. There is little doubt that it was probably used somewhat earlier but markers were lost. Note that this land was to be held in trust, by William's nephew, James Bailey, for descendents of William's son, Austin. The 1880 census of Pleasants County, WV shows Austin's widow, Mariah, living on this property. Her daughter, son-in-law and grandson were living with her.

Austin Bailey Family in the 1880 Pleasants Co., WV Census............. Mariah Bailey ..................61..F..................Farmer............................ .......VA = B. 1818-1819......... Sarah P. (Bailey) Lamp....23...F.................Daughter................................VA = B. 1856-1857......... Hugh Lee Lamp..........................1...M...............Grandson.......................WV = B. 1878-1879.........

Upon Mariah's death in 1882, this property, along with the Bailey family cemetery passed to Sarah P. (Bailey) Lamp. The property then passed down through the Sarah P. (Bailey) Lamp family until at least the year 2000. Although it was sometimes identified as the Bailey cemetery well into the 20th century, it gradually became called The Lamp Cemetery.

Among the unproved graves in this cemetery are certainly William and his wife.

In 2008, over 90% of the documented burials are either descendents of William Bailey or their spouses. All of the Lamps buried in this cemetery are descendents or spouses. This cemetery has been in the hands of William and his descendents for almost 200 years. A more accurate naming of this property will be The Bailey-Lamp Cemetery.
