Major Mall was serving in the Fourteeth Infantry and was in the Burma Jungle patroling on 9 June 1944. He was leading a patrol of seven men through dangerous territory when they received fire from the front. He and the soldiers were crawling to a bush line to observe and they were fired upon by a Japanese machine gun. Major Mall and the seven men with him perished.
He was posthomously awarded a Purple Heart and a Silver Medal.
He was assigned to Fort Davis, Panama Canal prior to his transfer to the South East Asian Command in New Delhi, India in 1943.
