his death certificate says his parents were John Hale & Frona Divine.

The informant was Belle Hale. I know he is in the 1850 census with John & Elizabeth, perhaps Elizabeth was John's 2nd wife?

or maybe John even had 3 wives;

Frona Divine, Louisiana & Elizabeth.

Marriage certificates might help clear it up.
