He was the son of John Wellborn Root. Like his father, Root was a highly recognized Chicago architect. His firm, Holabird and Root, was responsible for the Palmolive Building (1929), the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chrysler Bldg at the 1933 World's Fair, and the Chicago Daily News Bldg (1929), among others.
