Eli was my first cousin, 5th removed. He was part of the Sly-Farnam connection which moved to Wisconsin in the mid 1800s from Leeds County, Ontario, Canada because land was plentiful and cheap. Born in Bastard Twp, Leeds Co Ontario Canada Son of Archelaus Kenney Farnham, and Naomi Sly, the name changed in spelling by census and other data to FARNAM. Eli was married 3 times with several children from the first and 3rd marriages.
Eli came West in 1836 and settled in Illinois, where he remained for 3 years. He then removed to Fond du Lac Co., Wis., where he was one of the first settlers. He married third wife Lucy Ann Hicks (born June 19, 1831 in New York State?) in Fond du Lac Co., Wis., in 1848.
In 1864, Eli moved from Fond du Lac County to the present Farnam farm, a 160 acre farm at what is now W5724 CTH T, Holmen, in La Crosse County, Wis. He bought it from a Mr. Jacob or Jacobson. There was only a log cabin and log barn on the farm. He went back to Fond du Lac Co. and brought his family to the farm in a covered wagon. The trip took three weeks. Lucy's brother Martin bought the farm west of Farnams. They had ten children. Lucy's sister died and Eli and Lucy brought up their three sons.
Lucy Ann did not have a Doctor's license but she was called upon many times to help when someone in the community was sick. She was also called upon to be a midwife. She made many of her medicines from roots and herbs.
Biographical History of La Crosse, Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties, Wisconsin, Published in Chicago by The Lewis Publishing Company in 1892:
Pages 514-515:
"... Eli and Lucy H. (Hicks) Farnam, were natives of Canada. Mr. Farnam came West in 1836 and settled in Illinois, where he remained three years; at the end of that time he removed to Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, where he was one of the first settlers. Mr. Hicks' family had come to Fond du Lac county in 1842, and Mr. Farnam and Miss Lucy H. Hicks were married in 1848. They continued their residence there until 1864, when Mr. Farnam sold his land in Fond du Lac county and purchased a farm in Lewis valley, La Crosse county; this he improved and made his home until his death, which occurred in 1891. He attained the good old age of four-score years. His wife is still living at the homestead in Lewis valley; she is now sixty-seven years old, and in excellent health."
