Benoni was born at Babel Mines, Jo Daviess County near the town of Warren, IL. These lead mines were abandoned after the railroad came through. His father was a teamster and was often gone long periods of time on wagon trips while his mother stayed home with the children. BH was excited to accompany his father on few trips as he got older.
The family moved west to Marshall County, Iowa. After the death of his father the family then headed for southern Iowa where he met his future wife.
The couple spent the early years of their marriage farming in Nebraska and began raising a family. They moved to Adams County, Iowa to be near his mother after she fell ill with cancer.
BH was not one to sit idle and was a modest entrepreneur. He enjoyed finding ways to improve the communities he lived in and help those in need. He operated successful businesses there and was elected as the overseer of the county poor farm.
He was active in his church and was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for a number of years. His free time was spent trading visits with his siblings, in-laws, cousins and other family members. Later they moved to a farm in Marion County to be closer to his wife's family.
He was proud of his children and grandchildren and often welcomed them for extended stays on the farm. He valued education and encouraged all of his children to become teachers and invest their time and money wisely. After he and his wife retired from farming and moved into town he kept busy attending activities with his children and grandchildren and working part time as a process server for a local law firm.
