James William Harrison enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 15, 1862. According to muster rolls, William fought in the Vicksburg Campaign in Mississippi. That campaign lasted from May through July 1863. In July the Jackson was under siege. William is paid for July and August, but he is absent on August 31. The remark states, "absent sick in Atlanta, Ga 31 Aug 1863." On the Muster Roll for September and October, 1863, we see that William "died in a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on 20 September 1863." William is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. It can be deducted that William was in the city of Vicksburg during the siege and, like so many others, suffered from starvation and disease. After the forces were paroled by Grant, they moved east, toward Georgia. William was taken to a hospital in Atlanta, but was too sick to recover.
