Driver, 20, killed in truck rig crash

A 20-year-old man was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer rig Friday afternoon west of Waterloo, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department.

Derek M. Garman, of Waterloo, suffered massive head trauma and died from his injuries, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

About 12:50 p.m., Garman was driving east on U.S. 6, just east of County Road 24, in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the trailer of the westbound rig. The truck driver, Robert A. Meyer, 59, of Fort Wayne, had moved to the right in an attempt to prevent a collision but could not avoid the Jeep, the statement said.

Meyer was not hurt. A passenger in the Jeep, Richard M. Phillips, 18, of Waterloo, may have broken ribs in the crash, the statement said.

The driver's side of the Jeep sustained extensive damage, and the rig's axle received minor damage. U.S. 6 was closed for a short time as crews cleared the crash scene, authorities said.

As I sit in Heave, and watch you every day
I try and let you know with signs, I never went away.
I hear you when you're laughing, and I watch you as you sleep
I even place my arms around you to calm you as you weep.
I see you wish the days away, begging to have me home
So I try to send you signs, so you know you're not alone,
Don't feel guilty that you have life, that was denied to me,
Heave is truly beautiful, just you wait and see!
So live your life, laugh again, enjoy yourself, be free
Then I'll know with every breath you take,
You'll be taking one for me!

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
