Maiden name is unknown. Research continues.

In 1809 Stephen & Mary SMITH & family moved from Sussex Co, NJ, to Pennsylvania, a distance of 350 miles. According to one early family history, shortly after arriving at Uniontown, Mary got word that one of her relatives was very sick in New Jersey and she rode back to NJ on horseback all alone in the wilderness. Mary would have been 36 years old at that time with three children under age 6, one of those a babe in arms. Older daughter Sarah age 20, may have cared for them in Mary's absence.
In 1823, Stephen and Mary Smith and family moved to Meigs County Ohio where they lived out their lives.

1850 census Mary SMITH age 77 born NJ living with Rodney HALSEY family, Orange Twp. Rodney was the brother of Mary's daughter-in-law Marilla. Josiah & Isaac SMITH administrators of estate of Stephen SMITH. Mary (widow) was allowed $100 annual support.

Early obituaries claim Stephen SMITH's father died while serving under George Washington, and that Mary SMITH's father furnished horses for the colonial army. However, since we cannot locate a name for Stephen's father and do not know Mary's surname, no one can join DAR on this line! Stephen may have served in military during Indian Wars (1790-1795) since there is a 7 year gap between their 1st child and 2nd child.
