Often reported as Melville, He reports his birth as Jan 3, 1889, 1891 or 1892. He is not listed in his father's obit leading one to believe late 1891 or early 1892 to be the correct birth year.

Melvin was married Dec 15, 1916 to Mary Squires in Beaver County, Utah. He reported he was 21, she 18.

His mother was Erselia 'Celia' Morante b.1855 Merced, CA., daughter of Jose & Isabella Morante. She and Melvin's father, William Leslie, married on April 18, 1872 in San Francisco. He was born abt 1835 in MA.

Erselia must have struggled to raise her children after William's death in 1891. In 1895 there are several articles in the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Call about the family's home being heavily damaged and under-minded by blasting from a construction site. It was located on the corner of Dupont & Edith Sts. on Telegraph Hill. The family was forced to flee their home. Erselia had several lodgers and took in sewing so there was a loss of income. The last article stated that it looked favorable that she'd be compensated by the contractor but that is unknown.

Son Eugene was a two time guest at San Quentin for burglary and robbery starting in 1895.

Sometime after the 1900 census, Melvin was adopted by Robert L. & Nora Ella Greenleaf and raised in Orange Co., CA. He resided with them on the 1910 census at age 18. It is unknown if they were family, friends or strangers.

Erselia's last known residence was in Stockton in 1902-1903 at the State Hospital where she was being treated for melancholy. Son Edward, who was working at Castle Bros.on Front St.in Sacramento, signs his mother in. Five months later, she passes away on Jan 11, 1904.

Their children, Melvin's older siblings, included:
William Leslie #6258856
Julia Cazneau Ritz #3540230
Eugene Leslie b.1876 and relocated to Philadelphia
Edward b.1883
Lucinda "Linda" b.1887 (are Linda and Cecilia M. Stewart the same person?)
