Birth name was Johann Wilhelm Baur. Military records of the Civil War list him with this name sometimes using Bauer, and list an alias as William J. Bower

John enlisted in Co. B, 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on Aug. 19, 1861, and was mustered in on Sept. 1, 1861. He was captured at Port Republic, VA, on June 9, 1862 and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. Testimony in the widow's Pension application from a Sgt. Hoyt, stated that when he left Libby Prison on Sept. 9, 1862, he left a very sick John Baur behind and did not expect him to live more than a few more days. The document then assigns the death date of John Baur as Oct. 1, 1862, at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA.

He was most likely buried at Libby Prison.
