He was captured at Port Republic, VA, on June 9, 1862 and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. Testimony in the widow's Pension application from a Sgt. Hoyt, stated that when he left Libby Prison on Sept. 9, 1862, he left a very sick John Baur behind and did not expect him to live more than a few more days. The document then assigns the death date of John Baur as Oct. 1, 1862, at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA.
