Thomas enlisted in 6th connecticut regiment of the continental army may 1st, 1777. He served in the company of Samual Barkers, with the rest of the Durham C.T. men. He was transferred to Eli Leavenworth's company in Nov. of 1778, due to the dismissal of Sam Barker. Served with the 6th untill term ended aprox 1780. His records show that in may, 1778 he camped at White plains N.Y. thur Sept. 1778 with Gen George Washington's army. In Oct. 1778 he was camped at horse neck across from West Point, there they would build 3 redoughts to help guard the great chain, acrossed the hudson river. In Dec. 1778 he camped at nelson's point, reading winter camp, then moved back to the highlands of New York in May, 1779. In July he was stationed at Robinson's Farm. The battle of Stony Point N.Y. occured on July 15-16, 1779 the 6th Reg. participated in this skrimish under General Anthony Wayne. In Aug. 1779 Thomas was on guard at General Howes house, but by feb 1779 he is listed as on command at New London CT. He returned to Robinsons farm by Aug 1779. Thomas is reported as being very ill in Frederichbourgh from Sept. thur Nov. 1779. He returned to duty Dec. 1779, at Morristown N.J. He was transferred to Westfield N.J. in early Feb 1780. Thomas was discharged in the latter half of April 1780. It is most likely that he reenlisted for 6 month term in the reorganized 4th Continental regiment form July to Dec. 10th 1780 to be with his son Miles Cook, a drummer in 4th.

Records show that he joined the First Presbyterian Church of Durham may 7th, 1809. His sons Elisha and Miles were founding members on May 17th 1792. He is listed in church records as having died Sept 18, 1820. He was buried in a now unmarked grave.
