Roy E. Gruwell, 80, of 822 Seventh Avenue, died Monday at a local care center after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the George L. Gay Funeral Home with burial in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty.
Mr. Gruwell was born Jan. 19, 1891, in Cedar County, son of William and Nancy Bolon Gruwell. He married Susie Helmer on March 29, 1957, in Los Angeles.
He was a custodian at the University of Iowa for 28 years retiring in 1956.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias.
Surviving are his widow: a son, Edward, and a daughter, Mrs. Herman (Ilene) Wolf, both of Iowa City; another daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Bernice) Helmer of Rosemead, Calif.; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 5 stepsons.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
