MRS. SUSAN STAIGER DIES OF PNEUMONIA
FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS HOTEL IN SALEM.
After a three weeks illness from pneumonia, Mrs. Susan Whitney Staiger died yesterday morning at her home on Court street. She was born at St. Joseph, Missouri, February 20, 1847, and spent her life from earliest infancy in Oregon. In 1867, she was married to Jonathan F. Staiger, who died February 3, 1907. Mr. and Mrs. Staiger were among the pioneer hotel people of Salem, having successfully conducted the Cottage Hotel for a period of about 25 years.

While having no children of her own, Mrs. Staiger gave a mother's care to Jennie Starkey and Mabel Whitney until they were grown, and always manifested an interest in the young people with whom she associated. She is survived by three brothers, George Whitney, of Woodburn; Charles, of Linn county; William, of California; and one sister, Mrs. J. A. Dodge, of Hubbard. The funeral will be held from the home, Sunday at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Bowersox , of Portland. Interment will be made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

FAMOUS AS HOSTESS OF THE COTTAGE
Mrs. Susan Whitney Staiger, for many years hostess of the Cottage Hotel, of Salem, and one of the best known women of Oregon, died at her home, corner Court and Front streets, at 5 o'clock this morning, after an illness of about three weeks. She was prostrated with pneumonia, and never recovered after taking to her bed. Mrs. Staiger was a native of Missouri, where she was born at St. Joseph, February 22, 1847. The Whitney family started across the plains when she was about six weeks old, in the train headed by Captain Palmer. They landed in Oregon after a seven month journey, locating in Marion county, taking up the donation land claim No. 102, where one of the sons, George Whitney, now has his home, about two miles north of of Woodburn. In April 1870, she became the wife of J. F. Staiger, of Salem, and has resided here ever since. Over 20 years ago they opened the Cottage Hotel and she has been connected with that until about three years ago, when she retired. Her husband died about four years ago. They never had any children.

Mrs. Staiger was a member of the Evangelical church, and she was more note3d for her charity and goodness of heart than for professions of faith. At her bedside were her brother, George Whitney and daughter, Mabel, of Woodburn, Mrs. Mary Ann Dodge, of Hubbard, and her brother, Charles H. Whitney, of Lebanon. Another brother, Wm. L. Whitney, lives in California.

The funeral will be held Sunday forenoon, and burial will take place in Rural cemetery.
