A Hessian soldier, George emigrated to the United States with his brother Joseph Heit and lived in Bedford Co., PA. Restless with farm life he went west and became a scout for the Seventh Cavalry, and was assigned to Co.I, Major Reno's command. At the battle of Little Big Horn he was gravely wounded, but survived.He recuperated at Fort Totten, and by 1880 was well enough to be a saloon keeper in Cherry, Montgomery Co., Kansas. Then his health worsened and he returned to Fort Totten, where he died and was buried. When the Battlefield cemetery was being completed, the Army decided to reinterr at the battlefield cemetery all wounded who had since died. The tombstone has the alternate spelling of his name Heid, not Heit. This is due to his German Script, where the t resembles a d.(this is my great-granduncle)
