Sister of poet Mattie Stepanek. Katie was the first of four siblings to be born with dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, a genetic disorder. She was born with dark hair and blue eyes and couldn’t regulate her autonomic systems—her heart rate, breathing, digestion, and blood pressure -- so she spent much of her life at Children's Hospital. The disorder eventually took her life, as it did Mattie's and those of her other siblings. She was nineteen months old.
