BARK OF CAPT. BEAM HAS PUT TO PORT
Capt. Geo. W. Beam, the well known river man, passed to his reward Saturday evening at his home in Coal Grove, honored and respected by all who knew him.
Capt. Beam has been in poor health for several months and the last few days his condition was most grave hence his demise did not come unexpectedly, yet when the end arrived it found his relatives and friends unprepared for the grievious blow, for Capt. Beam was a man whose death meant a heavy loss to his every acquaintance.
Captain George W. Beam was born at Burlington, October 22, 1844, and in early manhood began to run on the river and by hard work, close observance to his duties and respect for his superiors, rapidly forged to the front of his chosen vocation. He ran on many of the big Cincinnati-Pittsburg towboats, but for the past seven years has acted as pilot captain of the Coal Grove - Ashland ferry in order that he might be at home with his wife and children, whom he loved dearly.
When Lincoln issued his call for soldiers Capt. Beam was one of the first to offer his services and for four years he fought valiantly for the cause he knew was right. He was a member of Co. F, of the 27th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Since the close of the war he always took an active interest in all things pertaining to the wellfare of his comrades and was an active member of the G.A.R. which organization will have charge of the funeral services, which will be held from the residence Monday afternoon at two-o'clock. Interment at Woodland.
Capt. Beam leaves a wife and four children. Chas of Ashland; Mrs. Spicer Mains of South Ironton; Mrs. Frank Britts of St. Louis and Miss Ora at home.
