Carl Victor "Vic" Koford, 96, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell.
He was born Dec. 28, 1909, to Alfred and Hulda (Sundin) Koford six miles northwest of Kalispell where his grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. John Sundin, lived and had a small sawmill operation.

He lived the first nine years of his life at the Koford homestead, midway between the Flathead Mine and the Hubbart Dam. He went to school through the third grade at the Crossing Creek School near Nirada.
In 1919, the family moved to Kalispell. He attended Elrod School through the eighth grade, then attended Flathead County High School and graduated in the class of 1928.
He worked for the ACM Lumber Company at Bonner for two summers, and then in 1930, went to work for the Park Service in Glacier National Park for four summers on trail maintenance and on completion of the Going-to-the-Sun Highway. In 1934, he went to work for the Kalispell Lumber Company and worked there for 27 years until the operation went out of business in 1960. The last 18 years there, he worked as a lumber grader.
Vic worked for Stoltz Lumber Company for three years and in the spring of 1964 he taught a lumber grading class for the Manpower Development and Training Administration. He then went to work at the Rocky Mountain Lumber Company and Louisiana Pacific and retired from there in January 1975.
Vic was quite active in the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union which was chartered as the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He served as secretary and president of Local No. 2773 of the L.S.W. for several years and then as president of the State Council of L.S.W. for one year. In 1988, after 50 years of membership, he was granted a lifetime membership in the Brotherhood of Carpenters.
Vic married Gladys Soderstrom on June 28, 1935. Vic and Gladys shared 71 wonderful years together. Many knew Vic and Gladys as the "neat old couple" who still held hands everywhere they went. Vic once stated, "It's hard to hold hands and handle their walkers at the same time." They had two sons, Ronald and Donald, and one daughter, JoAnn. They have lived in Kalispell all their married life.
Vic loved the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing. He called Glacier National Park his playground and spent many happy days there. After retirement, Vic and Gladys spent part of each winter in Arizona and Southern California in their motor home. They enjoyed camping in the deserts of the Southwest. They also spent many summers teaching their grandchildren how to camp and fish.
Vic went to Sunday school and confirmation at the Scandinavian Methodist Church on the corner of Second Street and Fifth Avenue West. Vic, Gladys and their children attended services there for many years and then attended the Epworth United Methodist Church for many years.
Vic was preceded in death by his two sons, Ronald and Donald; two sisters, Elsie Branes and Tillie Wihlborg; and three brothers, Oscar, Ed and Paul.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Koford, in Kalispell; one daughter, JoAnn Paullin of Kalispell; two grandsons, Jeff Koford of Seal Beach, Calif., and Kevin Koford of Portland; two granddaughters, Kimberly Paullin Edinger of Newman Lake, Wash., and Angela Paullin of Phoenix; also nine great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ariel, Ashley and Zack of Newman Lake, Wash., Taylor, Cameron and Courtney of Portland, and Alex and Grant of Seal Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Seek of Kalispell, and Elaine Bates of Yakima, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Judy Koford, of Portland and Bend, Ore.; with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Carl Victor Koford will be at 10 a.m. Friday July 28, at Epworth United Methodist Church, with burial at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 27, in the Johnson Mortuary Chapel.
