Arturo F. Ariaz, age 83, a lifelong Guadalupe County resident, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2002 at the Guadalupe County Hospital following an illness. Arturo was born on June 30, 1919 in Puerto de Luna, NM to the home of Seferino Ariaz and the former Juanita Griego.
Arturo was reared and attended schools at Puerto de Luna and Santa Rosa. Arturo attended Eastern New Mexico University for two years. Arturo was a World War II United States Army veteran.
Arturo married Guadalupe Garcia on January 25, 1946 in Puerto de Luna. Arturo served as Guadalupe County Assessor, worked for the NM State Highway Department/Santa Rosa District and was employed until his retirement by the NM Employment Service Commission. Arturo ranched and farmed at Puerto de Luna and spent many hours there in the evenings and following his retirement. Arturo also enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family. Arturo was a charter member of the Guadalupe County Soil Water Conservation District, was a past St. Rose of Lima school board member and a longtime member of the San José Society of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Arturo was a loving husband, father, and brother who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Arturo was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara Ariaz in 1978, four brothers, Margarito Ariaz, Erminio Ariaz, Richard Ariaz and Marcos Ariaz. Survivors include his wife, Guadalupe Ariaz of the home in Santa Rosa, two daughters, Mary Ann Caldwell and her husband, Wayne of Snyder, TX and Magdalena Monserrat and her husband, Javier of Puerto de Luna, three sons, Arthur Ariaz Jr. and his wife, Christine of Santa Rosa, Andrew Ariaz and his wife, Kristie of Albuquerque and Albert Ariaz and his wife, Roberta of Puerto de Luna. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters, Louisa Romero and her husband, Alfonso of Amarillo, TX and Oralda Cross of Portage, Indiana and a brother, Joe Ariaz and his wife, Lou of Tucumcari, NM, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends and good neighbors.
Rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 4, 2002 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2002 with Father Stephen Schultz officiating. Burial will follow at San José Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert García, James Eddie Caldwell, Louis Flores, Mark Chávez, David Sánchez and Art Ariaz III. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Ralph Ariaz, Albert Ariaz along with all his other nephews, relatives and friends. Visitation hours will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
