Lindley moved to Los Angeles in 1875 and in 1901, he and his associated opened a sanitorium in Idlywild in Riverside County. He also founded a private hospital that later became the California Hospital Medical Center which was located in downtown Los Angeles. In 1902, the hospital became the largest and best-equipped hospital west of Chicago. In 1998, the hospital merged with Catholic Healthcare West Southern California. In addition, Lindley was a candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles in 1906 and served on the board of the city library.
