Wednesday, April 17, 1957Ill two days, Wilson Gardner Burns, 82, of 1728 Grant St., died unexpectedly aat 8:25 p.m. Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. Mr. Burns apparently was in excellent health Sunday. He attended morning and night services at Temple Baptist Church. He became ill during the night Sunday, appeared improved Monday, but suffered a relapse Tuesday. He entered the hospital Tuesday morning. At the time of death, Mr. Burns was sitting in a chair in his hospital room, with several members of his family. Death was attributed to heart failure. Widely known as ‘W.G.”, Mr. Burns was employed by the Selby Shoe Co. for 53 years. He was foreman of the cutting room and was held in high esteem by his associates and fellow employes. He retired in 1949. Mr, Burns was an active member of the Baptist Church for more than 60 years and served in all of the lay offices of the church. He was superintendent of the Sunday School deacon emerits and member of the official board. As a young man, Mr. Burns was a member of Co. H., Ohio Volunteers. He was among the first to move into the Highland Addition, buying his Grant St. Home in 1906. A son of the late William and Flora Belcher Burns, he was born Sept. 20, 1874, at Franklin Furnace. He moved to Portsmouth about 1890. Mr. Burns was married in 1896 to Elizabeth Echart Burns, who died in 1922. He was remarried in 1947 to Claire Cameron Burns, who survives. Mr. Burns is survived by the following children: Charles Russell Burns, 5726 Kentland Ave., Sciotoville, chief deputy sheriff; Mrs Earl C. Brandel, 913 30th St., a teacher; Mrs. James Tutwiler of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; L. William Burns, 2325 Willow Way, Portsmouth, Times reporter and secretary of the Scioto County Fair Board; Mr. L. D. Cochran, 1046 25th St., a teacher; Mrs. Charles Mathews, 3113 Michigan Ave.; Lowell E. Burns, 891 Bertha Ave., captain of East End fire company; principal of Massie School; Atty. David C. Burns of Chula Vista, Calif., and Atty. Robert H. Burns of St. Louis, Mo. Two sons, a brother and two sisters preceded him in death. A brother Ernest Burns, died March 5. The body is at the Daehler Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday by Rev. Hall Dautel. Burial is to follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
