Paw Creek
Mrs. Short, formerly Virginia Lea Cathey Casey, 93, died July 15, 2012 at the Harris Hopsice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital. A native of Paw Creek, NC, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Evelyn Cathey. She was an Alumna of Queens College and spent her professional life in trade association work with The National Electrical Contractors' Association and The American Subcontractors' Association. She helped organize The American Subcontractors of the Carolinas.
Upon her retirement, the ASAC established the Virginia Casey Short Annual Award of Excellence to be awarded to an individual who meets criteria of excellence in established leadership in all areas of performance in the construction industry.
The national ASA presented her the Superior Performance Award for Excellence in Association and Service to the Construction Industry.
Mrs. Short was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dwight L. Casey, Sr. and her second husband, Carl P. Short.
Mrs. Short is survived by her three children, Cynthia Thompson, D.L. "Ike" Casey, and Laurence Casey; two step-daughters, Betty Jean Sansing and Carolyn Holding; as well as ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 16, 2012 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28204. There will be a reception following at 1:00 PM at Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon Road Charlotte, NC 28210.
Memorials may be sent Covenant Presbyterian Church or Sharon Towers Scholarship Fund.
