Ludwig was born at Posen, Saale-Holzland-Kreis, Thuringen, Germany. In 1879, at the age of 16, he came to America and made his home with his brother William in the township of Harmony, Rock County, Wisconsin. On June 18, 1885, he married Caroline Gessert and made their home on his farm located east of Edgerton where he resided until his death. To them 5 children were born.
Surviving relatives are his 4 sons, Henry and Arthur at home, Louis, Herbert and a daughter, Sidonia, wife of Herman Venske, 3 step-children John Gessert of Watertown, Mrs. Herman Bublitz, F. C. Gessert and 16 grandchildren all of whom lived in Edgerton.
