William Henry Hosfelt, son of George Henry and Pamelia Smith Hosfelt, was born January 31, 1871 in Tama County, Iowa. He came to Cass County, Massena Township, with his parents in May of 1871. They settled on the farm where George and Velma Hosfelt now live. In 1891 his father passed away and he and his older brother, Aden, farmed in partnership with their mother until 1905.

On February 1, 1905 William married Alice Cora Melzer, daughter of William and Mary Holste Melzer. Alice was born April 26, 1884 in Cook County, Illinois and came to Victoria Township with her parents in 1884. After their marriage they established their home on the farm where later Lyle and Aletha Hosfelt lived until retiring to Massena. William and Alice's great-grandson, Michael, now lives on that farm.

The three children of William and Alice were: George W. Hosfelt, born August 11, 1906; Lyle H. Hosfelt, born May 26, 1908; and Lois A. Hosfelt Green, born February 13, 1916.

William served many years on the board of education in the Massena School District. He was a director of the Massena Co-op and took part in civic affairs. Both were active in Massena Methodist Church. Alice was a fifty-year member of Chapter 429 Order of Eastern Star and also belonged to the Daisy Garden Club. William belonged to Massena Masonic Lodge No. 515. After their farm sale in December, 1945, they retired to Massena. William died on October 2, 1955. Alice died August 12, 1976. They were buried in Massena Center Cemetery.
