Sarah was born on Frenchman St. in New Orleans, in a house between Moreau and Casacalvo Streets. She was the daughter of Robert Durant (b. 1798) and Celina Scott (b. 1822 of County Fermanagh). Robert was a sailor from New York. She was the granddaughter of Alexander Scott and Suzannah Noble, both of Ireland.

She was baptized on the 30th of October 1843 at St. Mary's Church, Chartres Street, New Orleans, La. Between the few months from her birth to her baptism, she was adopted by the Girard family. Her godparents are listed on her baptism record as the Jastram's from Martinique. There was a Francois Jastram who lived rn at the same address as Sarah. Francois was in the cigar business and the Girard family owned a cigar store in 1850 at 226 Royal Street.

Sarah married Charles Reifel in 1865. Sarah died in Galveston, Texas and her death certificate incorrectly shows her mother as Sarah Jastram.
