Nevada Granville (Higginbotham) West was the daughter of Granville H. Higginbotham (1833-?) and Maria Frances (Thurman) Higginbotham (about 1839-before 1880) both of whom were born in Kentucky and died in Missouri.

Nevada's maternal grandparents were William M. Thurman (1813-1858) and Cynthia J. (LeCompte) Thurman (1815-1881) both of whom were born in Kentucky and died in Missouri.

Nevada had one known full-sibling:

Mary C. Higginbotham 1859-

Nevada's mother, Maria Frances Thurman, was the oldest child in a family of 7 children whose parents came as pioneers from Kentucky to Macon County, Missouri, between 1843 and 1846. Both Maria Nancy Thurman and her younger sister Nancy Margaret Thurman (1846-1885) married Higginbotham brothers, Granville and Andrew Higginbotham in Macon County, Missouri.

Nevada's parents, Granville Higginbotham and Maria Frances Thurman were married in approximately 1858. They were in the 1860 census of Macon County, Missouri. At that time, they had their first child, 9-month-old Mary C. Higginbotham. Although relationships are not listed in this census, it is known that 3 of Granville's siblings were living with them in 1860 (ages 25, 16, and 14) in Macon County, Missouri (see census below).

1860 Census of Independence Township, Macon County, Missouri, Post Office East Fork:

Granville Higginbotham 27, father (Head of Household)
Maria F. Higginbotham 24 (wife)
Mary C. Higginbotham 9 months (daughter)
Andrew Higginbotham 25 (brother)
Thomas Higginbotham 16 (brother)
Mary J. Higgenbotham 14 (sister)

Nevada was born in 1869. It is unknown whether Nevada's parents had any children in between Mary C. who was 9 months old in 1860 and Nevada's birth in 1869. This writer was unable to find an 1870 census for this family which would tell if there were any more members in this family.

Sadly, Nevada's mother died sometime before the 1880 census. Her exact date of death is presently unknown. Nevada then went to live with her maternal aunt, Nancy Margaret (Thurman) who had married her paternal uncle Andrew Higginbotham. However, Andrew had been shot and killed in 1866 on his own front porch in Macon County, Missouri, at the close of the Civil War by Quantrill's Raiders when he refused to turn over his horses to them. Nancy Margaret had been left with a newborn baby named Ann Gertrude Higginbotham. By 1880, Nancy Margaret had remarried to widower John Sunderland (1844-1909) who had one son, Thomas; and together they had 7 children (5 of these children are shown in the 1880 census). Nevada's maternal grandmother Cynthia Thurman was also living with this family in 1880.

1880 census of Indepenence Township, Macon County, Missouri:

John Sunderland 35, farmer
Nancy [Thurman] Sunderland 34
Thomas Sunderland 14 [John's son by previous marriage]
Ida Sunderland 9
Elzora Sunderland 7
Hetta Sunderland 6
Annie Sunderland 4
Joseph Sunderland 2
Gertrude Higginbotham 13 [Nancy's dau by Andrew Higginbotham]
Cynthia Thurman 65 [Nancy and Maria Thurman's mother]
NEVADA HIGGINBOTHAM 10 [Nancy Margaret's niece]

It is unknown what happened to Nevads's father, Granville Higginbotham, after her mother Maria died. There is a Granville H. Higginbotham who lived in Chariton County and married a Mary Sterne in 1885. They had 2 children and he died and is buried in that county (Memorial 33088242). However, by the age on his tombstone, he was born in 1843 which is 10 years younger than Maria's husband Granville in the 1860 census (shown as born in 1833). Therefore, I do not beleive they are the same person.

Nevada's aunt Nancy Margaret died in 1890 when Nevada was 21. In that same year (according to the 1900 census) Nevada married Harrison Aaron West (1854-1922) who was 15 years her senior and had previsiouly been married once and maybe twice and had at least 2 children, George and Anna West. Nevada and Harrison West were living in Nebraska by 1891 when their first child was born.

Nevada and Harrison West had the following known children:

1. Tessa Nevada (West) Berry 1891-1990 (born in NB)
2. Vesta Violetta (West) Wirshing 1893-1929
3. Sylvia Alta (West) Richmond 1896-1977
4. Golda/Goldie West 1902-1911
5. Leslie H. West 1905-1987

1900 Census of Ford, Highland, Tabor, and Winter Creek Precincts, Scotts Bluff, Nebraska:

Harrison West 45, farmer, born NY
Nevada West 30, wife, born MO
Tessie 8, dau, born NB
Vesta 6, dau, born NB
Sylva 3, dau, born NB
Anna West 17, born CO (dau of Harrison West by previous wife)

By 1906, the West family was living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, according to the "1906 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta Record," as listed on Ancestry.com.

Nevada died on February 5, 1908 in Westlock, Alberta, Canada, according to family trees on Ancestry.com. Date of death is also verified by her tombstone by the person who originally established this memorial. Nevada was buried in Dungannon Cemetery next to her daughter Goldie who died at the age of 9.

The 1916 Census shows Harrison A. West still living in Canada. The British Columbia, Canada, Death Index of 1872-1990 Record shows that Harrison A. West died in British Columbia, Canada, in 1922.
