Nevada's maternal grandparents were William M. Thurman (1813-1858) and Cynthia J. (LeCompte) Thurman (1815-1881) both of whom were born in Kentucky and died in Missouri.

Both Maria Nancy Thurman and her younger sister Nancy Margaret Thurman (1846-1885) married Higginbotham brothers, Granville and Andrew Higginbotham in Macon County, Missouri.

Nevada then went to live with her maternal aunt, Nancy Margaret (Thurman) who had married her paternal uncle Andrew Higginbotham. However, Andrew had been shot and killed in 1866 on his own front porch in Macon County, Missouri, at the close of the Civil War by Quantrill's Raiders when he refused to turn over his horses to them. Nancy Margaret had been left with a newborn baby named Ann Gertrude Higginbotham. By 1880, Nancy Margaret had remarried to widower John Sunderland (1844-1909) who had one son, Thomas; and together they had 7 children (5 of these children are shown in the 1880 census). Nevada's maternal grandmother Cynthia Thurman was also living with this family in 1880.
