A self-educated and self-made man, Clark was vice president and general manager of the once flourishing Los Alamitos Sugar Company, thirty miles from Los Angeles. Before settling in Los Angeles, Clark was engaged in the United States mail contract business in Horse Plains, Montana. In 1876 he moved to Butte, Montana and served as the bookkeeper for the Dexter Milling company, owners of one of the first quartz mills built in Butte. Clark and his brother was the driving force behind the Union Pacific Railroad stretching from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. In 1892 he and his wife established their home in Los Angeles where he became known as one of the most reliable businessmen in the city, eventually becoming the president of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Clark was also well known as a major contributor to various charitable and civic organizations.
