Lowell D. Cortelyou, 86, Raritan, died at 3:18 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at McDonough District Hospital, Macomb.
He was born March 15, 1920, near Raritan, the son of Dean and Esther (Corzatt) Cortelyou. He married Mary Ellen Wilson on June 17, 1942, in Blandinsville. She preceded him in death July 2, 2002.
He is survived by one son, Mitchell (Elaine) Cortelyou, rural Raritan; one daughter, Marcia Cortelyou, Rochester, Minn.; two grandchildren, Lori (Jeremy) Schultz, West Des Moines, Iowa, and Jaime (Adam) DeCrane, Stafford, Va.; six stepgrandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opal (Wayne) Schroeder, La Harpe, and Frances Lindberg, Gainesville, Fla..
In addtion to his wife and his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Doren Cortelyou, two sisters, Hazel Evelyn Cortelyou in infancy, and Blanche Cook and one grandson, Anthony Cortelyou.
He graduated from Media-Wever High School. He served in the Navy During World War II, in the European Theater. He farmed in rural La Harpe with his wife and family, before moving to Raritan in 1964 where he continued farming. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Sanibel Island, Fla., and South Padre Island, Texas, during the winter months. He enjoyed restoring tractors and other machinery and was an active member of the Henderson County Historical Society and Olde Thyme Threshers for many years. He was a member of the Stronghurst American Legion Post 765. He was an active member of the La Harpe United Methodist Church.
Burial with military rites will be in Raritan Cemetery.
