CALVIN R. COBLENTZ, who is numbered among the progressive and enterprising farmers of Middletown District, was born on the old Coblentz homestead, that he now owns, in the above district, at the foot of the Catoctin Mountain, March 3, 1863. He is a son of Philip and Mary Ann (Kefauver) Coblentz.
He was raised on his father's farm, and while a lad attended the schools of his native district. He, like most of the family have been, became a farmer, and for the past twenty-five years has followed that occupation. He is the present owner of the farm in Middletown Valley, upon which Herman Coblentz, his great-grandfather, settled in 1766. This tract contains 144 acres of very best land, and is well improved, with good buildings. As an agriculturist Mr. Coblentz has achieved much success, and he is practical and progressive in his methods.
Mr. Coblentz has not confined all of his energy to agriculture, but from time to time has been interested in various other enterprises of the county. He was for several years a director in and vice-president of the Grangers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Frederick County. In 1907, he resigned this position to become one of the organizers of and director in the People's Fire Insurance Company of Frederick County.
Politically, Mr. Coblentz is an active supporter and stanch adherent of the Democratic party, and was a candidate of that organization for county commissioner of Frederick County, but as the county is largely Republican he was defeated with the rest of the ticket. He has served as school director and road supervisor of his district. In church circles, he is a consistent member of Christ Reformed Church of Middletown, in which he has served in an official capacity.
Mr. Coblentz was married December 12, 1889, to Lizzie L. Brandenburg, daughter of Daniel and Lydia A. R. (Remsburg) Brandenburg. Mr. and Mrs. Coblentz have three children: Millard C., Leslie N., and John Vernon.
