Whitey was the fourth child of David M. Hanes and Elizabeth A. Schoen. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, he was a corporal. Whitey married first to Ellouise A. Kibbons on November 24, 1954 in Momence (Kankakee County), Illinois. They had nine children; three sons and six daughters. Whitey and Ellouise divorced in 1974. He married secondly Mary Elizabeth Harrison on August 2, 1975. She preceded him in death.
