William H. Martin, 70, of Mountain Brook, Alabama, a descendant of the founders of Martin in Weakley County, Tennessee, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at his home.

Graveside services and burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at East Side Cemetery in Martin with the Reverend William P. Mullins, Jr., officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 pm this evening (Tuesday) at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin.

Mr. Martin was born April 16, 1922, in Martin, son of the late John Marshall Martin Sr. and Luella Hefley Martin. He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Presley Martin of the early pioneer family of Thomas and Drucilla Vauter Martin who migrated to Weakley County from Buckingham County, Virginia. The City of Martin is named for William Martin, son of Thomas and Drucilla Martin. Mr. Martin is the namesake of William Martin.

Mr. Martin was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve V-12 Program at Fort Schuyler, New York, after attending the U.S. Naval Academy for several months. Active World War II duty included service aboard the Battleship USS Washington. He attended the University of Louisville and graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Business Administration, including some post graduate courses.

After his retirement from Federal Service in 1990, he and his wife, Mary Margaret Murray Martin, travelled extensively in Europe, South America, Alaska, and other states. He resided in Birmingham, Alabama, and was a life-long member of the Methodist Church. He was a Scottish Rite Shriner and was affiliated with the Zamora Temple in Birmingham. He was a longtime member of the American Legion.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters and their husbands:
Cheryl Martin and Thomas R. Porter of Houston, Texas, and
Barbara Martin and Christopher T. Collins of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee;
two grand-daughters, Laura Elizabeth Porter and Adalan Margaret Collins;
a brother, John M. Martin, Jr. and his wife, Dorothy Martin of Alexandria, Virginia;
a sister, Ann Martin Harpole and her husband Dr. David H. Harpole of Richmond, Virginia;
four nephews and nieces:
John M. Martin III of Atlanta, Georgia,
Dr. Mary Lu Martin Thompson of Augusta, Georgia,
Dr. David H. Harpole, Jr. of Durham, North Carolina, and
Lillian Harpole Hazelton of Richmond, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Kay Martin
