Ellen Missouri was daughter of James Merrill Coleman and Mary Ellen Hughes. Ellen's mother died during child birth, and she was raised by "Old Auntie," a former slave that stayed on with the family after the civil war. Ellen married James R. Palmer, son of Benjamin Franklin Palmer and Mary Jane Pace. Together Ellen Missouri and James R. Palmer had the following children:
