January 5, 2013 note from Great grandson, Jim Medaris:

"John 'Jack' Medaris was born on July 8, 1857 in Hawkins Valley, Clermont, Ohio, USA to Elias Medaris and Karen Capuche Abbott, he married Cora June 4, 1888 according to Missouri marriage records in Pike Co., MO.

"John 'Jack' died as a result of a railroad accident working for the Burlington rail road as a division foreman, as a result of the accident he spent the last 2 weeks of his life in bed an succumbed to a concussion and pneumonia on Feb. 21, 1907 at his home in Louisiana City, Pike Co., MO.

"The Medaris branch of my family is quite extensive and goes back to Virginia to Domingo Medeiros, as a land owner there he brought many immigrants from Europe as indentured servants and as they worked off their passage they would be given 50 acres of land a rifle and a mule.

"As the Ohio territory was opening up in the late 1700's as a result of the Lewis and Clark expedition, The Federal Government was granting land to all families who moved there. As a result 4 of the Medaris brothers (3 generations removed from Domingo) traveled up the Ohio river and settled there in the Ohio territory, prior to Statehood in 1808. Three of the brothers settled in the North of the Territory, but Charles, father to Elias and grandfather to John 'Jack'. settled in what is now Clermont Co., South east of Cincinnati, Ohio.

"Incidentally I am told there is a 'Medaris' Cemetery somewhere in Ohio full of Medaris'. If you locate it please let me know."

Many thanks to Anne & Bill for stone photo.
