A private in Company E, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hiram Frees and his fellow soldiers had been in the field for three weeks by the time they arrived at Pickett's Mill May 27, 1864 during the Union push to Atlanta. During the battle that day, Hiram was shot in the arm by a Confederate soldier. Alive but disabled by a fractured shoulder, Hiram was captured by the Confederates that evening and was never seen again.
