Charles M. Cozzens was born April 9, 1921, to mother Catherine Cozzens. He graduated from Bradley Beach Grammar School and Neptune High School.
Charles Cozzens served in the U.S. Army from January 1945 to October 1946. He saw service in the Philippine Islands and Japanese Islands. While in service he received the Army of Occupation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Medal and the Victory Medal.
He worked as a special police officer from 1947 until his regular appointment in January, 1950. He received his Sergeant stripes in December, 1962.
Cozzens' obituary notes that he was an excellent marksman with the revolver, carbine and sub-machine gun.
Charles 'Bud' Cozzens joined the Bradley Beach First Aid Squad in 1942 and was one of the most active members. He compiled an amazing record of over 3,500 first aid calls and gave numerous blood transfusions over the years.
'Bud' became a member of the Independent Fire Company in 1943 He had an average attendance at fires of over 80%. At one time or another he held offices of Chief, President, Vice-President, Captain, Lieutenant, Driver, Assistant Driver, Chief Engineer and the company's representative to the local relief association.
Sgt. Cozzens died at Fitkin Hospital of injuries he received 15 hours earlier, when his patrol car struck a steel light pole as he swerved to avoid another car. The accident occurred at 3:30 am on Main Street, Bradley Beach, 2 blocks from the Police Station. Sergeant Cozzens had served with the agency for 17 years.
He was survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Mrs. Joseph Urspruch and Miss Mary B Cozzens, his mother Catherine Cozzens and a sister, Mrs. David Birchenough, a brother, a special police officer and an aunt, Dorothy Augers, all of Bradley Beach.
