Elijah married Permelia "Pearl" Shaffer about 1907. They met when she went to work as a servant in the household of Elijah's sister and brother-in-law, Florence and William Deets. Elijah was also living in this household at the time. Permelia was only 11 years old when she began working there. They had two children, Elijah Lee "Junior" and Mary Ruth. The family moved from Grafton, West Virginia to Texas sometime between 1916 to 1924. At the time of the 1930 and 1940 census they were living in Harris County, Texas.
Elijah was employed as a sheet metal worker at the time of his death.
