Born as Franz to his parents Rudolf Nahodil and Rosamond Astor, his name was changed to Frank after his arrival to the U.S. Frank immigrated from Germany aboard the ship Switzerland which arrived at the Port of Philadelphia in August 1892.

Frank, along with the rest of this family, worked the anthracite coal mines of the Shamokin area. Frank suffered from lung disease (silicosis) for many years before his death.
