"The death of Porter R. Backus, a prominent Hartwick Seminary farmer until his retirement three years ago, occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital following a short illness. He was 73 years old. Mr. Backus had operated a large and modern dairy farm at Hartwick Seminary from 1924 until his retirement in 1957. He was born in the town of Morris on June 11, 1887, a son of Allen and Ella (Folts) Backus. He was engaged in farming all his life, and prior to moving to Hartwick Seminary 36 years ago, operated farms in Morris and Milford Center. At his death he was a Councilman on the Hartwick Town Board. He was also a director of the Hartwick Town Fire Insurance, and a member of the Otsego County Farm Bureau and the Otsego County Extension Service. He was a charter member of the Hartwick Seminary Grange. Mr. Backus was a member of the Milford Methodist Church, and also had been active in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hartwick Seminary. He also was a member of Tienderrah Lodge, No. 605, F. and A. M. of Morris. Mr. Backus was married twice. His first wife, the former Miss Agnes Green to whom he was married in 1920, passed away in 1935. In 1942, he married the former Miss Esther Wolford of Hartwick Seminary. She survives together with a brother, former Otesgo County Clerk Chester T. Backus of Morris; and two cousins, Dr. H. W. Backus of Hartwick and Charles Morse of Washington, D. C. ...
