He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1891 and from Cornell in 1892, with a focus on forestry. He was responsible for the planting of the first commercial longleaf pine in North Carolina , where he introduced the modern practice of cupping pine trees for turpentine.

At the time of his death, he was Chief of Land Acquisition of the national forest region for eastern and southern states.
