From Find a Grave contributor JLF: As you will see in the photo, the headstone looks like it was originally meant to stand upright but now lies semi-flat and is framed with concrete. The stone has been pushed up on one side by the growth of the large tree. At some point (I imagine at Spadra) the headstone was broken in two. The two pieces were placed back together but the crack runs right through Eva's day of death. I can read that she died in Oct of 1885 but the day was completely damaged. I was a little confused about her year of death because in your bio for her mother you wrote that Eva was buried next to her father. I assumed that her death came after her father's but the stone reads 1885 although I have to admit that the 5 was difficult to make out. It was very worn but it just didn't match up with the other numeral sixes well enough for me to make the numeral 6 call. I could also feel the flat roofline of a number 5. Her life span was also very difficult to read due to wear and damage from the elements. She was less that a year old because there is no inscription for Ys (years). I can clearly see Ms (months) and 29 Ds but the number in front of the Ms was worn clean away. There is just the barest hint of a numeral 2. If I am on the right track Eva would have been just shy of 3 months of age.
In my initial e-mail, I told you that the crack that runs through Eva's day of death made the date impossible to read. I actually could make out what appeared to be a numeral 3 but I couldn't tell if that meant she died on the 3rd, the 30th or 31st because what was inscribed after the numeral 3 was impossible to read. On the burial info (from cemetery records) it is noted that she was buried on Nov, 1 1885 which means it's quite likely that she died on the 30th or 31st of Oct.
