Death certificate has date of birth as 17 September 1872, which does not align with his age at death of 72 years, 1 month and 4 days. Date on headstone is most likely the correct one. He was the son of Alexander Adams, a Raleigh merchant, and Francis Hogg of Louisburg.

In 1870, Edward is listed as living with his mother, Francis in St. Marys, Wake County, working as a farm laborer. By 1880, he is still living in St. Marys, alone, working as a grocer.

On 25 May 1882, Edward married Nancy T. Spence on the old Dave Avery Plantation, Garner, Wake County, North Carolina, which was owned by Nancy's father at the time. They relocated to Raleigh shortly thereafter.

In 1884, Edward joined the Typographical Union and held various offices in that organization. He worked as a printer for the News and Observer, the Morning Sun and the Raleigh Times, from which he retired in 1926 after 13 years.
