Oldest son of Martin and Kiturah Ann (Fletcher) White. At the age of 6 he moved with his parents to Sangamon County, Illinois where he grew to adulthood and married Ailcy Caroline Foster on January 17, 1844.

James was a farmer in Illinois and Missouri and also help run the saw mill. He moved his family to Kansas with the rest of Martin White's family, then to Bates County, Missouri.
