Caleb Brokaw Jr., a longtime parishioner of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, died Monday, September 19, at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan. Caleb Brokaw Jr. Mr. Brokaw was born in Plainfield, N.J. in 1922, the oldest child of Caleb Brokaw Sr., and Mary Radford Brokaw. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1939 and from Harvard College with a bachelor of arts degree cum laude in American history in 1943. At Harvard, he was a member of the Hasty Pudding Institute and the Speakers Club and he worked on the staff of the Harvard Lampoon. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in France and was discharged after the war with the rank of corporal. After his military service, he worked in New York City while obtaining a master's degree in business administration from Columbia University. Caleb Brokaw met his future wife, Anne Hammersley Johnston, in New York City, where they both sang in the choir at St. George's Episcopal Church. He and Mrs. Brokaw were married in 1955 at St. Stephen's Church in London, England, and they were active members of the New Canaan community after they moved here from New York in 1959. Mr. Brokaw spent most of his career with Texaco, Inc., after having worked for the National Biscuit Co. and the advertising agency of Cunningham & Walsh. His career with Texaco took him from New York City to Brussels, Belgium, and back to Texaco's headquarters in Harrison, N.Y. His last several years before he retired from Texaco in 1984 were spent as the director of corporate contributions for Texaco and the Texaco Foundation. Mr. Brokaw volunteered for many years with the New Canaan Town Band, St. Mark's Church and the New Canaan Nature Center, where he served on the board of directors for several years. He was a member of the New Canaan Senior Men's Club and sang with the Gentlemen Songsters for many years after his retirement. He loved music and the outdoors, his family said. Before his health declined, he spent many happy hours with Mrs. Brokaw, attending performances of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic and walking the trails of Connecticut's parks, the beaches of Fire Island and the byways of the Adirondacks. He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, reading and gardening, and he and Mrs. Brokaw traveled widely in Europe and South America for many years before and after his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Anne Brokaw, his three daughters, Clare Speyer, Katherine Brokaw and Caroline Brokaw Tucker, his sons-in-law Andrew Speyer and Steven Russ, and his eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Radford Brokaw, of Scotch Plains, N.J. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 24, at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in Mr. Brokaw's memory to Waveny Care Center, New Canaan, or to the New Canaan Nature Center.
