Stephanie Kutz-Laymon was an avid reader, collected fine writing pens, was kind to people who needed help, had a wonderful sense of humor and a zest for life, and loved French toast. In the last three years of her life she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and was an inspiration to those who knew her.
Kathryn Jones, born April 5, 1918, was married to Norman Engle who died in World War II. Stephanie Kutz-Laymon was their daughter. Kathryn later married Gerald L. Kutz and they had a son, James.
Born June 1, 1920, Gerald Kutz grew up on a family farm in central Wisconsin and spent his entire life working at the family quarry business. He was in partnership with his brother in Kutz Bros. Company which quarried stone products and built roads. Gerald and Kathryn Kutz had a strong work ethic, were family oriented, and enjoyed attending the theatre at Highland Community College.
Although they lived in Freeport their entire lives, the Kutzes traveled the world. Kathryn Kutz ran the International Fellowship program in Freeport, working with the federal government to bring foreign guests to Freeport to tour American factories and meet Americans. The Kutzes hosted dozens of foreign guests at Thanksgiving time over the years, becoming friends with them and visiting them around the world. Additionally Kathryn Kutz was the first female member of the Consistory at Bethany Church.
James Kutz is Production Manager and General Superintendent with Cord Construction, the construction company that built the present Student Conference Center and the building that preceeded it at that location.
All of the Kutz Family members realized the value of education and what Highland meant to Freeport. Gerald Kutz and Kathryn Kutz were some of the first to donate to the Acres for Education campaign that bought the land where Highland now stands. They believed in Highland Community College before it was Highland Community College.
Stephanie Kutz-Laymon died May 9, 2003. Kathryn Kutz died September 3, 2008. Gerald Kutz died April 26, 2002. Originally created in memory of Stephanie Kutz-Laymon in 2003, the scholarship was renamed as the Kutz Family Scholarship after the death of Kathryn Kutz.
