Veteran of World War 2

Orval Hasty, age 89, was born in Lanesboro, Iowa on March 21, 1923 to Frank and Gladys (Waldren) Hasty. He went to school in Farnhamville, Churdan, Maxwell and graduated from Gowrie in 1940.

On August 27, 1940, Orval joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served honorably until October 27, 1945. During World War II he served his country in Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific.

On March 30, 1945 Orval was married to Harriett Bennett of Odebolt, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born.

Orval attended Iowa State College as a Dairy Industry student following which he worked in various dairies. In October 1950, he purchased the Parkersburg Creamery, which he ran until 1972. In 1965, he became a Broker Salesman and started selling real estate for Schuck Realty, from which he retired in 1988.

Orval has been a member of the United Methodist Church of Parkersburg since 1950, where he served as lay leader and on the Board of Trustees.

Orval served the City of Parkersburg as councilman during the 1970's and was Mayor from July 23, 1973 to December 31, 1981. He served on various community activities including: Chamber of Commerce (President), Medical Center (Chairman of the Board), Nursing Home, Parkersburg Public Housing (President) and member of the Butler County Board of Review. Orval has been a long time member of the American Legion, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Amvets and Beaver Meadows Golf Course.

Orval died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, from natural causes.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Johnson and her husband Mike; his parents, Frank and Gladys Hasty; and two brothers, Franklin Jr. and Warren.

He is survived by his wife Harriett; two daughters, Gail (Jim) Hartman of Lenox, Iowa and Becky (Leon) Thorne of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one step-great granddaughter.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Parkersburg United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg.

Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, (319) 346-1534 and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
