Born in Logan County, Kentucky, he moved to Simpson County, Kentucky with his parents as a toddler. The eldest of 16 children, he declined interest in the family's plantation and became a Pinkerton Detective with the KATY Railroad. He later became a detective with the Dallas Police Department. E.T. Hughes moved to Texas in a covered wagon in the 1880s with his wife "Ella" and the first five of their 11 children. Among his descendants were Sammie Lee, Ernestine, and Betty Jane Tucker of the successful singing group, The Tucker Sisters.

His 11 children were: Bessie Ann Hughes, John Robert Hughes, Mary Jane Hughes, Hattie Victoria Hughes, Samantha Isabell Hughes, Thomas Edward Hughes, Gladys Louella Hughes, William McKinley Hughes, Lizzie May Hughes, Lee Ona Hughes, and Joe Bailey Hughes.
